Heart of the Matter

Heart of the Matter - Robin Pickens

At my recent trip to the Moda Headquarters, where I got to start the Heart of the Matter quilt using Robin Pickens' beautiful new Darling Peony collection. As a newer quilter, this project pushed me in the best way—and I love how it turned out!

I recently had the absolute privilege of attending Modavation—a retreat at the Moda Headquarters specifically for quilt shop owners. Now, let me just say… while I’m not technically a shop owner, I got to tag along on behalf of the quilt store I work for (perks of the job, right?). It was such an inspiring week—full of connection, creativity, and conversations with some of the most talented designers in the industry. Seeing the behind-the-scenes magic of how fabric collections come to life was an experience I won’t forget anytime soon.

One of the highlights? A schoolhouse session with the lovely Robin Pickens. We got a first look at her gorgeous new collection, Darling Peony, and even got to dive into one of her newest quilt patterns, Heart of the Matter.

If you know me, you know I’m no stranger to sewing. I’ve stitched up everything from clothes to costumes to stuffed goose outfits (don’t ask). But quilting? That’s a whole different beast. I’m still very new to this world—this beauty marks quilt number five for me! Most of my sewing know-how helps, but piecing, pressing, and matching points is its own kind of magic.

The Heart of the Matter quilt pushed me in the best way. The pattern isn’t overly difficult, but for a beginner-ish quilter like me, it had just the right amount of challenge. Plus, working with fabrics and colors outside my usual comfort zone was so refreshing—Darling Peony is soft, floral, and oh-so-sweet.

This quilt would be such a beautiful piece to hang up for Valentine’s Day, a wedding anniversary, or to gift someone as a cozy "I love you." The hearts in the design say it all—sometimes literally stitching love into fabric is the best way to share it.

I’m so happy with how it turned out
Next up - I need to send it to the long armer! Can’t wait to see it all finished and snuggled up.

P.S. If you’re thinking about starting your own Heart of the Matter quilt—do it! And let me know so we can cheer each other on.
